Impressions of the 4 door

I recently traded in my 2 door 6 speed Rubicon JK for a 4 door Automatic Rubicon JK. This was a case of the wife making me do it. Though she states that this is all my fault. The extra length is apparant from the beginning after driving the 2 door, but that doesn't last very long. You just can't turn as sharply into the parking spots like you used to. Having the extra doors is perfect when you are trying to get 4 people out of the rain in a hurry. Of course accessing the back seats is so much easier than the 2 door. As an example for how much room you have in the back, I carried five 35x12.50 BFG's in the back with the soft top still folded up underneath the Hardtop. I could have probably gotten six in there. The acceleration is a little weaker, but still impressive with the extra weight of the hard top and 4 door model. The 6 speed definately has the automatic beat with the low 1st gear. Gas mileage in the city is poor, 15mpg with the auto vs. 18mpg with the stick. On the freeway, the Auto's higher 4th gear beats the Sticks 6th gear, so you make up a little there. The average gas mileage indicator has had some updating to it. The accuracy is greatly improved over my 2 door.

Common Sense and Safety should always be observed when working on your vehicle or doing modifications. Jackstands, wheel blocks, disconnecting the battery are a few of the basic safety precautions that should be used and may not be mentioned in the write ups on this site. You are responsible for your own installation, these write ups are a helpful guideline and should not be taken as an official installation instruction. My write up may be different from the kits currently out there, so alwasy double check the manufacturers installation instructions when installing anything. I try to keep the site up to date with changes that have occured as I discover them, but may not have the latest unless someone lets me know. If you feel that an install is above your capabilities after reading my write ups, I recommend getting together with a club and getting some help. Only a few times have I needed to employe some actual help from a shop to get something done. Usually welding or A/C work. While I have spent many years working on mechanical systems, I am not an expert, nor do I pretend to be one. I hope these write ups have been useful to you.
